The brocade case is not just packaging; it is part of the ritual of taking tea on the road. In the photos, the gaiwan has a handmade quality that mass-produced pieces lack. The lotus is one of those features you appreciate more the longer you own the piece.
The case lining protects the porcelain from knocks and chips. The pieces balance well in the hand — nothing top-heavy or awkward. The foot of each cup is glazed smooth, so it will not scratch your table. The pink coloring sets this one apart from plainer pieces in the same range. The green enamel is the first thing you notice in the product photo. The yellow enamel adds a bit of theater to an otherwise practical piece. Among the details in the photos, the floral stands out without shouting.
A thoughtful gift for anyone who travels with tea. A set this useful tends to become the favorite. Bring it along; good tea should not stay home.
