Unroll this scroll and a plump, contented pig open up before you, painted the old way on silk. It is the pig that holds the eye first; everything else in the scroll plays supporting role. The composition balances its subject with bamboo, calligraphy and ink wash, so the scroll never feels empty or busy.
Lines are spare and expressive and washes soft at the edges; it has the rhythm of brushwork done without hesitation. The symbolism is part of the pleasure: in China the written word outranks all other arts — a good hand was the scholar's calling card. Color stays ink tones and soft grays — enough to lift the ink, never enough to shout. No passage feels labored. Bamboo shows exactly as much as needed, and no more. The tall, narrow format is part of the pleasure — you read it downward, the way you'd stroll a path.
A reading nook, a tea-drinking corner, the wall above a low cabinet — anywhere quiet suits it. If you collect pig pieces, this one earns its place. It is a fine example of bamboo and calligraphy Chinese painting, the kind of piece that grows on you.
